angry in audi

by John Girvin | tagged: , , | permalink

I had a run in with an angry Audi (S5 I think, nice) driver tonight.

Picture the scene. College Avenue, Belfast, evening rush hour, two lanes of traffic heading out of the city and two lanes heading in. I’m stopped at lights in the country bound lanes, at a junction where the city bound lanes can cross mine by way of a filter light. My lights change to green and I set off.

A sharp-suited Audi driver in the city bound lanes turns at the junction and attempts to drive over me, despite the well lit road, my hi-vis jacket and the bike’s extremely bright LED headlights and auxiliary lights. I loudly express my displeasure at his actions, to which he responds that his lights were green (wrong – his straight ahead lights were green but the filter for turning couldn’t have been on) and, best of all:

Bikes have to give way to cars!

I managed a dumbfounded “What the hell…?!?” before he drove off! What I suspect he really meant was:

Bikes have to give way to my car!

There was no harm done in the end, but the incident shows the utter and frankly inexcusable ignorance of some drivers.
