Since I’ve been out of touch for a bit, here’s a quick summary of some of the local cycling events coming up in the next month or so that I’m aware of.
August 28th sees the 6th Lap The Lough event, back bigger and better than ever with a new 130Km route around Lough Neagh, the largest lake in Ireland and Britain. I’m taking part in this one again, and it’s always been a good ride. Registration is only open for another few days, and there are exclusive goodies to be had for riders, so sign up soon!
Next comes the Giant’s Causeway Coast Sportive on 17th September. This is a new event, different in style and much tougher than Lap The Lough, but looks great. You’re guaranteed spectacular scenery along the Causeway Coast if nothing else, and there is a choice of route to suit most abilities (even me). Registration is open now.
If you fancy a trip to the Mountains of Mourne, the Mainstay DRP 100Km Charity Cycle leaves from Castlewellan on the 18th of September. The route is a combination of fast flat coastal roads combined with moderately steep climbing. Click the link for more information and registration details.
Finally, Marie Curie are running their third annual Roe Valley Cycle Ride on Saturday 24th September in Limavady. It’s in a similar vein to the Craigavon Cycle Trail with 50k and 80k routes available. I’ve never ridden this one before, but Marie Curie do organise a good event, so it’s worth considering if you’re free that day. Contact Gavin McGucken on (028) 8224 9888 or gavin.mcgucken@mariecurie.org.uk for further details.
That lot should keep you out of trouble, though I hope you don’t mind a bit of rain. It is Northern Ireland in September, after all.
