bad day for the bike

by John Girvin | tagged: , , | permalink

Today hasn’t been a great day in my cycling life.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been having some physiotherapy treatment for back problems recently. During a session today, the physiotherapist suggested that I need to spend no longer than 30-45 minutes in the saddle in any one session as the normal riding position is possibly preventing my back from healing properly. This restriction is to be put in place immediately and until further notice, which destroys any chance of doing any full-length Sunday training rides for the immediate future. Furthermore, my participation in Lap The Lough will be thrown into serious doubt should the ban be in force for longer than a week or two.

Then to add injury to insult, on my (wet and windy) commute home today, coming away from the physiotherapy session where the above ban was imposed, I was travelling along the Newtownabbey Way cycle path when I lost control of the back wheel of my BeOne on a slippery wet corner and had a minor crash. In over a year of regular cycling, this is the first crash I’ve had! I went down hard on my left arm and now, a few hours later, the arm and the left side of my back are very painful. I’m sure my physiotherapist will be pleased to hear about this one!

So not a great day, but it hasn’t dampened my enthusiasm and I’ll be back on the bike as soon as possible.

But for now, it’s sleep and painkillers, to wait to see what the morning brings.

Gutted for ya mate, lets hope you’re not off the bike for too long.

    Ouch! Hope you’re OK.

    And what a sh***er for the 45 minutes :(

At least my UK Devil’s Hill record will stay intact for a while!

I’m fine, if a little banged up and sore. It wasn’t a big crash, thankfully.

I can get to work by bike in 45 minutes, so that’s a small mercy.

I was three seconds off your record on the second attempt, and my course is a shade longer and steeper than yours. I’m coming for you.

    Sorry to hear that.

You should PM Greg66 from BikeRadar, he had a similar time recently and may give good advice.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks, Wheezy!
