can’t take the break

by John Girvin | tagged: , | permalink

Today was the first day of a self-enforced break from cycling to work.

Over the past few weeks I noticed I was becoming increasingly tired and slow on my regular commute rides, as if I was either fighting a cold or ‘flu or perhaps just overdoing things and not recovering properly. The needle was drifting towards the “not fun” side of the gauge to be honest.

The established wisdom is of course to “listen to your body”, so rather than push on regardless and maybe end up properly ill, I decided to back off. I’ll not stop cycling completely but I’ll cut back to one day’s commuting for a week or perhaps two.

That’s what I had decided. Then I commuted this morning by car. My TTD (Time To Desk) approached 90 minutes and I got soaked in the rain walking from the car to the office, so it took 50% longer than a standard cycle, I still got wet and didn’t get to have a hot shower afterwards to thaw out.

Let’s see how long I can stand it.
