Sustrans are the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity and maintainers of the National Cycle Network, including my local Newtownabbey Way and (not so local) Comber Greenway cycle routes. They are asking you to pledge to Change Your World between 29th June and 4th July 2009 by swapping just one car journey for walking, cycling (of course), using public transport or car-sharing instead.
Nearly one in four car journeys are less than two miles, so we’re asking you to join with thousands of others and swap just one car trip between 29 June – 4 July 2009.
Just walk, cycle, use public transport or car-share instead. Amazingly, if we all take this one easy action, together we’ll reduce car traffic by 10% – healthier journeys, cleaner air and quieter streets. Sounds like good car-ma to us.
Sorry about the car-ma pun, that’s theirs.
Think about how you use your car without thinking. Next time, before you grab those keys, stop for a second and ask yourself if your journey can be achieved by other means. Do you really need to drive to the shop for that paper and bar of chocolate, or can you walk? Can you take the bus, train or bike to work or will you just sit in the road traffic again? With only a little effort I think we all can find one car journey that can be replaced, and we’ll all likely benefit from doing so.
Visit the Change Your World website and make your pledge today.
