cycling goals for 2009 – q1 review

by John Girvin | tagged: , , | permalink

Three months ago, I set myself some cycling goals for 2009. Now that a full quarter of a year has passed, it’s time to do a quick review and see how I’m doing.

The goals I set myself were as follows:

  1. Get fit enough to cycle commute 4 days every week, with occasional 5’s
  2. Make time for training and social (ie: non commuting) rides
  3. Get a road bike
  4. Get my “classic” (ie: old) mountain bike (’95 GT Zaskar) out of storage and into the mud
  5. Motivate a former mountain biking buddy back into some kind of cycling
  6. Attempt a local sportive road ride
  7. Eat better (I’m not too bad, but there’s room for improvement!)

I’ll address each goal in order:

  1. I’m still cycle commuting three days a week regularly.  Moving up to four is proving to be tough going.
  2. I’ve been adding a few miles to my commuting routes and making it out on combined training / social rides with the Team Lard guys on a semi-regular Sunday morning basis.
  3. Get a road bike? Check.
  4. I haven’t made much progress on this so far, but I hope to at least retrieve it from it’s storage hole in the next couple of weeks. An assessment will have to follow to see what sort of state the old girl is in after all that time spent sitting idle.
  5. I’ve been pestering, and he’s up to 10-15 miles off road now.
  6. I’ve entered the 60 mile Bangor Coastal Challenge, and will likely enter the 90 mile Lap The Lough and 50Km Marie Curie Craigavon Cycle Trail too.
  7. I need to work on this some more! I’m permanently hungry from all the cycling and I find it hard to resist the all-too-easily obtainable buns and chocolate bars in work. I also need to sleep more and drink less coffee (these last two are perhaps connected).

2009 report card, Q1 interim result: 4/7

I think that’s not bad going for three months, I’m actually further on than I expected to be at this point in the year.

Roll on Q2!
