There’s some exciting news from Belfast City Council (really), with a press release announcing the arrival of competitive cycling in Belfast city centre.

The Halfords Tour Series is coming to Belfast

The Halfords Tour Series: Belfast, part of the two race Halfords Tour Series Ireland and based on the format of the hugely successful Halfords Tour Series UK, will have some of the UK’s and Ireland’s top cycling teams competing in a race around a city centre circuit. A Commuter Relay race for the non-elite riders is also being held.

This event falls on “Bike to Work Day” and is the centrepiece of a “Two Wheels: Two Weeks” programme, both being promoted by Travelwise Northern Ireland and designed to encourage and highlight the many benefits of cycling.

As a sweetener, free breakfasts and secure bike parking are being provided in the grounds of City Hall to anyone who cycles to work that day!

The Halfords Tour Series Belfast takes place on Friday 18th June 2010. The main race starts at the front of City Hall at 7:30pm and will last around 75 minutes. This will be preceded by a “Commuter Challenge Relay” race at 7:00pm. It should be a great evening’s entertainment!
