I haven’t had a great time on the bike these past few weeks, I’ve crashed not once but twice and been told that I can’t ride for more than 30-45 minutes at a time. Following those incidents, my participation in the Lap The Lough 140Km cycle challenge at the end of August was looking doubtful. Not taking part in “The Lap” would be an enormous disappointment, since it is the final one of three local sportives that I’m attempting in order to raise funds for the RNIB.
Yesterday, I got the final go/no-go decision.
And it’s a GO!
Well, it’s a begrudged “go”, given only on the basis that I still don’t train for more than an hour before the day itself and, since Lap The Lough is the final big ride of my season, I can rest properly for a long time afterwards. But it’s still a “go”, and I’ll take what I can get!
I’ve signed up and should get my official T-Shirt any day now.
Lap The Lough will be a huge challenge. My post-Bangor training plan was already ambitious, and was torn to shreds by the training time restrictions. I’m recovering from the second crash, but my shoulder is still painful. My back problems haven’t fully cleared up and are still causing some hip and leg pain. Suffice to say that it’s going to be an extremely tough, long day in the saddle!
I’ll need to pace myself very carefully so I can have even half a chance of completing the course. I’m not even concerned about time or average speed – I just want to get around – though I’d be delighted if I finished in close to six hours riding (not counting lunch or rest stops).
No excuses left, I just have to get out there and ride.

Good luck mate, take it easy and I’m sure all will go well.
Best of luck.
Just take things easy. You wont loose that much fitness between now and the end of August.
Woot! Am chuffed for you mate!
Thanks for the good luck wishes!
My biggest problem will be to control the pace and not fly off at the start!
Best of luck John, bet it will be no problem to you. I will hopefully see you there.
John,
If you need a bit of extra TLC make sure and see the physios at the breaks.
Anything else, give us a shout.
Best
S
Thanks, SiD, I didn’t know you’d have physio support during the day. I’ll see how I go!
