stealth ninja cyclists

by John Girvin | tagged: , | permalink

The dark evenings have been here for some time now, but still I see stealth ninja cyclists on the way home, dressed in dark clothes and with no lights.

I saw three or four on the way home yesterday alone. A couple were on the footpath (I’m not sure if that’s better or worse) but one in particular was on a steep – my mountain bike rolls down it at around 30mph without me tryin – downhill, semi-rural and therefore semi-dark road at the end of my commute. I’m nervous enough going down this road in the daylight, but no way would I do it in the dark and dressed for burglary.

Possibly worse are the riders with tiny, faintly green LED front lights that are barely as bright as your watch backlight. They’re still all but invisible but may be happy in a false sense of security because they have “lights”. Case in point: years ago, cycling home from university with one of these lights on the front, I was stopped by the Police for having no lights!

I don’t understand these people. A set of perfectly decent, bright cycle lights can be bought for less than two pounds. TWO POUNDS that might stop them getting hit by a car, or worse.

I keep telling myself “Darwin will win in the end”, but I’m going to start shouting at them soon I think.
