Today I was invited to a charity 50Km in aid of Habitat for Humanity. However circumstances conspired against me and I couldn’t make it to start start line in time, so as a penance of sorts and with the June 100 Challenge in mind, I plotted a 60Km+ route and headed out.
From a start in Newtownabbey, I made for Carrickfergus initially and from there along the Shore Road to the Newtownards Road in Belfast and the main gates of Stormont Castle. This was a fitting waypoint as it was the starting point of the original charity ride.
I continued on for a short while to Dundonald and hooked up with the Comber Greenway for a short distance at the East Link Road. I left the Greenway at the Knock Road and headed for my old school, Grosvenor High School, as it’s currently being demolished and I wanted to snap a few shots of the work in progress. Staff room? We don’t need no Staff Room any more. Or an assembly hall, sixth form centre or science block.
After the photoshoot, it was a normal ride home back through the city centre and along the Sustrans NCN93 cycle path parallel to the M5 motorway.
I scraped in over the 40 mile mark – just! 40.01 miles completed at 15.7mph average speed, with a maximum speed of 34.5 mph. Another June 100 leisure ride complete.
