Back in September I declared that it was “time for the winter bike“, meaning that it was time to switch to my modified Commencal Normal Disc 2008 commuter ride. But soon afterwards I managed to break a pedal off and wreck the cranks, discovered the bottom bracket was on its last legs and decided to fit some proper mudguards, so I was very soon back off the winter bike and back on to my BeOne Storm “summer” bike.
Now it’s November and wintry weather is here in force, conditions for which the BeOne is really not suited. Today was supposed to see me back on the cycle commute after a week’s break, so I spent yesterday getting the Commencal ready for action.
It didn’t seem like there wasn’t much work required. I’d already replaced the bottom bracket and crankset, so “all” that remained was to try and fit the SKS Chromoplastic mudguards that I’d bought.
Unfortunately it was not to be. The Commencal lacks the frame lug eyes required to attach the mudguard struts, and even if it had them the brake calipers would have got in the way. Imagine me doing my sad face now.
In the end, I fitted an older set of mudguards that I had lying about. They’re not as all-covering or as sturdy as the SKS Chromoplastics, but they fit, which is probably more important.

I went out on Saturday afternoon, after the rain, and began to wonder if I shouldn’t get a front mudguard for my trek. It got quite splashy on the legs.
