trouble at t’sheds

We had some trouble at the bike sheds at work last week as some of the local lowlifes tried to steal the bikes. Unfortunately, today they succeeded in making off with one.

Last Friday, after 5pm, I was out of the office at a meeting and so I actually missed the fun itself. The story I’m told goes that one of my larger colleagues scared off a couple of ne’er do wells from the street level car park, that had been conveniently left open to the street (and ne’er do wells) by builders working on the floors above us. They didn’t get anything, but wrecked one poor guy’s cable lock to the extent he had to walk home (only a couple of miles) and will likely have to cut the lock off next week.

Mine was the only other bike in the sheds at that time and they’d left it alone, more or less. My front mudguard was displaced so they’d had a look at least, but decided against it. I wonder if my two-lock security put them off?

But today they came back, again through the open street level car park door. They made off with some builders’ tools and managed to break the lock on another colleague’s bike and make off with it. The bike was only new before Christmas as well.

All credit to our management though, they say we can keep our bikes in the main office from now until the building’s outer doors are secured better: 7 floors up, in an office full of people and behind a swipe card entry door. Steal that.
