Alan In Belfast has uncovered something of interest to Belfast cyclists in the minutes of a council meeting held in October. In a nutshell, the council’s Development Committee discussed introducing a cycle scheme (similar to Dublin or Paris) to Belfast.
Following a presentation from representatives of Friends of the Earth, Sustrans and the Northern Ireland Cycling Initiative regarding the Belfast Cycle City vision, a motion was put before council to “engage with the Department for Regional Development, and other relevant agencies, in relation to the possibility of the introduction of [...] a cycling scheme in Belfast”.
Schemes in other cities have been a success in encouraging more people to get on bike, and at little cost to the public purse. I’d love to see something like DublinBikes start up in Belfast!

Though as Tim mentions in a comment below my post, unless they sort out proper cycle lanes around Belfast … then amateur cycling may remain a lethal hobby!
I think he has a point. Just today, it’s been widely reported that UK cyclists are three times more likely to be injured than in other European countries.
