On 16th March, the CTC’s Roger Geffen joined forces with CTC volunteers and Sustrans staff in Londonderry to present evidence to the Environment Committee of the Assembly which is considering whether to make it illegal to ride a bike in Northern Ireland without wearing a helmet.

another winter off the bike
As I write this it’s been three and a half weeks since I’ve been near a bike. It’s been been three and a half weeks since I’ve been near anything much but the sofa and TV, really, as I’ve been suffering from a particularly bad bout of seasonal ‘flu coupled with a nasty green-spitting chest infection. Lovely.

An interesting talk from Mikael Colville-Andersen, Copenhagen’s “Bicycle Ambassador”, about how important the bicycle is for liveable cities and how compulsory use of helmets has been shown to threaten cycling culture and reduce cycling in cities around the world where it has been implemented.

hey 2010, how’d it go?
2010 for me, in terms of cycling anyway, wasn’t a great year at first glance. I had a couple of crashes, illness, injury and bad weather at both ends of the year kept me off the bike more than I’d like, and I missed out on the Bangor Coastal Challenge and my notional goal of doing “2010 in 2010″. I also lost interest in this blog after it all got a bit too ranty and aggressive. Bah.
But dig a bit deeper and there were many positives.
